Teeth Whitening Q & A

Why do teeth change color?

The most common reason that teeth change color is the natural aging process. Over the years, your tooth enamel breaks down, revealing more of the dentin underneath. Dentin is yellow, so the more visible it becomes, the darker your teeth appear.

Other factors that may cause teeth to change color include:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Using tobacco
  • Taking medication with tetracycline
  • Eating foods like curry or tomato-based sauces

You might also develop yellow or discolored teeth due to the beverages you drink. Red wine, coffee, and tea contain tannins — biomolecules that attach to and darken your teeth.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening uses FDA-approved solutions like carbamide or hydrogen peroxide to eliminate stains and discoloration from your teeth. Thanks to advances in treatment, teeth whitening is safe, typically well-tolerated, and presents few side-effects.

What are the types of teeth whitening?

At A&M Dental Arts, Dr. Singh offers two types of teeth whitening, including:

In-office chairside teeth whitening

In-office chairside whitening can make your teeth up to eight* shades brighter in a single appointment.

Prior to treatment, Dr. Singh covers your gums and tongue with a protective dam. She then applies a bleaching solution to each tooth and lets it rest for about 20 minutes. Once the solution sinks in, Dr. Singh points a blue light at your teeth, triggering the whitening reaction.

She repeats the same steps a few more times until your teeth are the desired shade of white. The entire process typically takes no longer than 90 minutes.

Take-home teeth whitening kits

If you don’t have time to schedule an in-office appointment, consider take-home teeth whitening kits.

Each teeth whitening kit contains two plastic mouthpieces, a syringe, and a bottle of bleaching solution. You transfer the bleaching solution to the mouthpieces with the syringe and wear them for several hours a day, whenever is most convenient. Take-home teeth whitening takes longer to provide results, but treatment is long-lasting and effective.

Are the results of teeth whitening permanent?

The results of teeth whitening treatment typically last 4-6 months, but it’s possible to extend them for even longer. Dr. Singh recommends practicing good oral hygiene. Brush twice daily, floss regularly, and visit A&M Dental Arts twice a year for a professional cleaning.

If you use tobacco, try to quit. If you regularly consume coffee or black tea, drink from a straw. Minor lifestyle changes like these can ensure a pearly white smile for much longer.
